9 Great Ways to Save Water

Why it’s worth the effort: Brushing your teeth seems like a quick job, but before you know it, four gallons of water may have slipped down the sink.
Your one-year effect: 2,880 gallons of water saved.
The effect if everyone in the U.S. did it for one year: More than four times the Mississippi River’s annual flow of water.
Fishing With David Or "Is This Really A Vacation?"

Recently, Joel and I went fishing in Alaska with my expert fisherman brother, David. Of course, you are all wondering about our big catch. Well, I learned a few things about myself and also about fishing in Alaska. The first day we spent fishing on a boat out of Homer, Alaska. We were on the hunt for the BIG halibuts! My first two lessons were learned the first day, right there on that fishing boat. First, I learned that I do get seasick. Second, I learned that halibuts are heavy. When you add that incredibly huge and large sinker that probably weighed about 5 pounds, they are even heavier. So, I confess that the deck hand had to help me reel in my halibuts. Joel would have helped but he was busy being seasick and also reeling up his own halibuts. Ditto for David!
A Long Hot Summer Can Be a Killer!

Heat is the number one weather related killer in the United States, although most people would guess that tornadoes, hurricanes or flooding would be the major cause of death. In fact, the National Weather Service statistical data shows that heat causes more fatalities that floods, lightning, tornadoes and hurricanes combined. Based on the 10 year average from 1994 to 2003, excessive heat claimed 237 lives each year.
Champion's Company Luau 2010

SEE MORE PICNIC PHOTOS!
On June 5th, 2010 Joel & Kathy Reets hosted Champion’s Annual Company Picnic. As always, everyone had a great time. This year we decided to have a luau since so many of us had recently gone to Hawaii and were still pining to be there! The luau was held at Joel & Kathy’s Lake House on Clearwater Lake in Sharpsburg. The food was great! We had traditional luau favorites including roasted pig (we ordered it from Williams Brothers Bar-B-Q in Douglasville...it was delicious and we didn't even have to dig a hole), tropical rice pilaf, baked plantains, Tropical salad with baby romaine, pineapple, macadamia nuts, bacon and coconut with a delicious tropical vinaigrette dressing & coconut cream and key lime pies for dessert! One thing everyone really enjoyed at the luau was the Hawaiian Shaved Ice! We hired Jump 2 It Party Rentals in Peachtree City and they provided everything we needed for all-you-can-eat shaved ice fun! We're not sure who ate the most but I think a few people tried all 11 flavors!
In addition to swimming, fishing, basketball, and horseshoes, there were plenty of fun games going on throughout the day. These included a Tacky Tourist Relay and Champion’s own version of “Minute To Win It”. Click here to see the photos! We were also treated to pontoon boat rides around the lake which was very relaxing. It really was a great day and can't wait until next year! We are already trying to come up with a theme for next year. If you have any ideas, please share your comments!

A Hike to Hike Inn

Seven of our family recently spent three days in one of the most unique facilities you will find anywhere in Georgia, the Len Foote Hike Inn at Amicalola Falls State Park. The Len Foote Hike Inn is named for Leonard E. Foote, a leading conservationist, biologist and nature photographer who lived and worked in Georgia until his death in 1989. He was a pioneer in the field of wildlife management who was devoted to preserving and studying the beauty of the outdoors.
The best part of the Hike Inn is revealed in the name. Guess what?
"Baby It's Cold Inside"

With temperatures plummeting here in Georgia this week, a safe warm home to come home to is on everyone's mind. But if your first comment as you walk in the door is, "Baby, it's cold inside!", you may decide to add a space heater or use your fireplace to toast your cold toes. But here are a few tips from the National Fire Protection Association on using auxillary home heating equipment.

Grease Fire Prevention - Watch What You Heat!

Grease fires occur when oil or grease type foods are heated and ignite. They happen most often when food is cooking and the cook leaves the room, becomes distracted or even forgets that the food is cooking. Such a fire can do significant damage, especially if it extends to surrounding cabinets or other combutilble items. If unnoticed, a grease fire can easily extend to a major house fire, engulfing the entire kitchen, adjacent rooms or even the attic.
What should you do if there is a kitchen fire? When if doubt, just get out. If you do vacate the house, shut the door behind you to help contain the fire. Call 911 after you leave.

25 Ways To Help Save the Planet

The following suggestions can help us do our part for the environment without a whole lot of effort.
1. Use a programmable thermostat. This way you won't waste energy heating and cooling your home while you are aay. If you go one step further and turn the thermostat down two degrees in the winter and up two degrees in the summer, you'll keep nearly 880 pounds of carbon dioxide from warming the earth.
2. Be judicious about washing clothes. Standard washing machines use about 40 gallons of water per load. Try and save a load every week, by using only full loads and if you wash in cold water, you save even more energy.
