Choose the Right Building Materials to Minimize Flood Damage

Research shows that 1/3 of floods occur outside designated flood zones. If you are repairing a water-damaged home, remodeling or rebuilding here are some tips to minimize damage if you ever have a flood.

Choose wood products over paper-backed products like drywall.
Consider hard surfaces such as tile for your flooring. You can always add an area rug for softness and warmth.
Place electrical outlets higher on walls.
Store documents, photos and other valuables in plastic storage bins.
Keep electronics off the floors.
