DO IT YOURSELFERS...BEWARE!

With many families looking for ways in which to save money this summer, the number of people attempting DIY projects in their homes has increased. While this maybe great for your wallet, it may not be so great for your health or for your home. So before you start that project please read these tips:
- Get advice before you start – most home improvement stores offer helpful brochures on common projects
- Get expert help if you are planning changes to wiring or plumbing
- Check for hidden pipe or wiring behind walls – you can purchase inexpensive detectors to identify where they are in the wall
- Measure twice - cut once! Check and re-check your measurements before committing yourself with saw or drill
- Make sure that tools such as drills, chisels and saws you use are in good condition and sharp– but keep them out of the way of children and pets
- Wear a mask and goggles to avoid breathing in dust or damaging your eyes
- Cover furniture and carpets when painting and be sure there is good ventilation
- Don't put yourself at risk of accidents – make sure your step ladder is stable
- Keep a first-aid kit handy
- Check your home insurance and get an accidental damage extension if necessary
