Prepare for Tornado Season

Tornado season is right around the corner and every family should take the time to prepare for it. In Georgia, the average number of days with reported tornadoes is 6. Most tornadoes in Georgia occur from March to May but they have been reported throughout the year. Tornadoes usually occur mid-afternoon to early evening time frame, but can occur any time of the day or night. Thirty-seven percent of all tornadoes are classified as strong or violent and these tornadoes are most likely to occur in April. In Georgia, tornadoes are often hard to see as they are surrounded in areas of rain and hail. The hilly terrain can also limit ability to see a tornado. Therefore, it is very important that you educate yourself and your family about tornadoes and also have a plan of action in place before bad weather develops. Some very helpful websites I came across are listed below.

Also, Channel 2 Action News and Severe Weather Team 2 team up again with Midland Radio Corporation and Kroger stores in a public service campaign raising the awareness of the need for in-home severe weather radios. Severe Weather Week in Georgia began Sunday, Feb. 1, 2009. This campaign helps Georgians prepare for dangerous weather as well as all hazard situations. The digital weather alert radio requires little set up and is easy to use. I personally own one and I love it because it alerts me of bad weather at night when otherwise I wouldn't know until it was too late. The partnership between Channel 2, Midland Radio and Kroger allows for a greatly reduced price of $29.99 from $49.95. Also, every radio sold contributes $2.50 to the campaign for local disaster relief and charities.
Please take the time to prepare for nature's most violent storms. Preparing, planning, practicing and staying informed is a matter of survival.
