How to Beat the Heat This Summer

So...it's not even officially summer and it's already HOT HOT HOT...and muggy!

How can you have a fun summer and still stay safe and cool? Here are a few of our favorite tips...

  1. CHECK YOUR AC: Clean or replace the filter in room and central air conditioners once a month during the summer. If you have central air-conditioning, have the ducts checked for leaks, which can reduce a system's efficiency by as much as 15 percent, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.
  2. SQUIRT YOURSELF: Keep a spray bottle in the refrigerator or in a cooler if you are out and about. Give yourself and kids a spritz when you feel hot. Begin with your wrists to quickly cool down the blood flowing through your veins.
  3. GIVE YOUR OVEN A SUMMER VACATION: Using the oven heats up the house. Try using the grill, microwave or stovetop. Or even better, eat salads or smoothies that will keep you and your house cool.
  4. EAT COLD TREATS: Bring down your core temperature with shaved ice, ice cream, popsicles and smoothies. Your kids will love you for it.
  5. DRINK LOTS OF COLD WATER: During summer, you sweat more, and you have to replenish the water in your body. Drink a nice cold glass of water and keep a bottle with you always.

HealthSouth Announces Plans To Build $22 Million Rehab Hospital in Newnan

BIRMINGHAM, Ala., May 23, 2013: PRNewswire/HealthSouth Corporation (NYSE: HLS) announced today that it plans to build a 50-bed comprehensive inpatient rehabilitation hospital in Newnan, Ga.

"We look forward to bringing this new hospital and the much needed comprehensive, inpatient rehabilitation services to the residents of Coweta, Fayette and south Fulton counties," said Linda Wilder, president of the southeast region for HealthSouth. "We also are grateful for the
tremendous, positive support we received from the community, its leaders and local healthcare providers, including Piedmont Health System."

"HealthSouth's commitment to locating a comprehensive inpatient physical rehabilitation hospital in our community reinforces the City of Newnan's desire to provide excellent healthcare services to local and regional residents," said Keith Brady, mayor of the city of Newnan. "This project enhances the City of Newnan's promise of creating an economically sustainable environment that stimulates a modern and growing economy, producing wealth for residents and businesses, strengthening existing and future industry clusters and diversifying the City of Newnan's economic base."

Construction on the approximately 55,000-square foot hospital will begin in the fourth quarter of 2013. The proposed 50-bed hospital will provide patients with access to specialized rehabilitation programs and innovative equipment and technology, including electronic medical records and is expected to be operational in the fourth quarter of 2014. The development of HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital of Newnan represents a $22 million investment in the community and, once fully operational, is expected to generate more than 125 new, full-time jobs and approximately 300 construction jobs.

"This is a milestone event for the city of Newnan and Coweta County," said Terry Daviston, chairman of the Coweta County Development Authority. "The new hospital will foster economic development and create jobs, and we look forward to adding HealthSouth's specialized rehabilitative care to the strong network of other healthcare services offered in our area."

In December 2012, HealthSouth received a certificate of need from the Department of Community Health to build a 50-bed comprehensive inpatient rehabilitation hospital in Newnan, Ga. The certificate of need was later appealed and that appeal has since been resolved.

The addition of HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital of Newnan will be HealthSouth's second hospital in Georgia joining HealthSouth Walton Rehabilitation Hospital in Augusta, Ga.

Summertime Fire Safety

The kids are out of school and it's time for summertime fun! For most families that means camping, grilling out and fireworks. However, these fun activities cause a lot of injuries and damage each year. How can you have fun with your family and be fire safe this summer? Here are a few summer fire safety tips:

GRILLING

  • Keep all matches and lighters away from children. Supervise children and be sure they know how to "Stop, Drop and Roll."
  • Check the connection between the propane tank and the fuel line before using the grill.
  • Do not wear loose clothing while grilling.
  • Be careful when using lighter fluid. Do not add fluid to an already lit fire.

CAMPFIRES

  • Rake leaves and pinestraw away from the area you build your campfire.
  • Keep campfires small and manageable.
  • Keep water and a shovel near by in case the fire starts to spread.

FIREWORKS

  • The best way to enjoy fireworks is to visit public fireworks displays hosted by professionals who know how to safely handle fireworks.
  • Never light fireworks indoors or near dry grass.
  • Do not wear loose clothing while using fireworks.
  • Stand several feet away from lit fireworks. If a device does not go off, do not stand over it to investigate it. Put it out with water and dispose of it.
  • Closely supervise children around fireworks at all times.

How Can I Be Sure My Sump Pump Is Working?

Check the outlet pipe to make sure it is not clogged or frozen. Follow the pipe and confirm that water are directed away from the property.

Check that the pump is clean. Plug in the pump and remove the lid (if there is one). Use a flashlight and look into the pump and see that the inlet pipe is clean and free flowing.

Test the pump by pouring at least 5 gallons of water and pumping it out. Be sure to pour the water in a way that will simulate the average flow into the pump. Force the pump to turn on and off 2-3 times and watch the action of the on/off switch while listening to the pump.

What Should I Do If I Have a Water Damage at My Home?

DO:

  • Have a professional plumbing contractor eliminate the water source.
  • Call a professional water damage restoration company immediately for help! Damage from water and bacteria growth can begin within just a few hours.
  • Remove as much water as possible from floors by mopping or blotting with clean white towels.
  • Turn off circuit breakers supplying electricity to wet areas if appropriate. Unplug and remove any small electrical devices located on wet carpet or other wet surfaces.
  • Remove wet area rugs or other floor coverings that are not attached. Do not remove wall-to-wall carpet.
  • Hang draperies and pin up furniture skirts to prevent contact with wet carpet.
  • Wipe furniture and prop up wet cushions for even drying.
  • Place aluminum foil under legs of wood furniture (especially antiques).
  • Remove small furniture items to prevent rust or stains and to expedite restoration.
  • Remove books, shoes, paper goods, fabrics, potted plants and other items that may stain the carpet (be sure to check under the beds and in closets).
  • Move photos, paintings, art and any high-value items to a safe, dry location.
  • Open drawers and closet and cabinet doors to speed the drying process.
  • Make plans for a restoration crew to move large furniture items onto dry carpet, linoleum, garage or storage area.

DON’T:

  • Don’t use your home vacuum because electrical shock may result as well as damage to the vacuum.
  • Don’t use TV’s or other appliances on wet carpet or floors.
  • Don’t place newspaper in the traffic areas because the ink transfers easily.
  • Don’t walk on wet carpet more than necessary in order to keep from spreading damage.
  • Don’t activate the HVAC system if it has been directly contacted by the water or it may spread contamination.
  • Don’t disturb visible mold.
